Consult the Owner’s Manual

While we can give some tips that should apply to all machines fairly well, the only way you’re going to locate information about your specific product is to check the owner’s manual. There, you’ll find maintenance guides, servicing schedule, and other important ownership responsibilities. If you can’t find the manual for your excavator, check the manufacturer’s website. Many manufacturers offer downloadable versions or will let you order a new manual.

Daily Checks

Before you start up your excavator for the first time each day, you need to make sure that you’re doing a thorough inspection. Regular wear and tear are pretty predictable, so you should make it a habit to check the trouble spots every day.

The most obvious sign of wear will be leaking fluids, so remember to do a visual inspection of the hydraulic oil, coolant, engine oil, and fuel systems. All hoses should be in good condition and fixed tightly. As you check out these components, give your fan belt a look to make sure it’s maintaining tension, and take a look at your fuel water separator.

Moving parts should all get a look, and this gives you a chance for a little maintenance in the meantime. While you’re inspecting your excavator, take the time to grease your fittings and pivot points, and give your air filter a look (this is quick to replace, so make sure you’ve got one on hand).

Swing Gear

Both the swing gear and bearing should have proper lubrication for their smooth functioning. Inspect the swing gear to make sure that there is enough grease and water hasn’t leaked into the compartment.

Proper Cleaning

Dirt, debris, mud, and sand will easily get caught up in your excavator’s undercarriage. Use a shovel or pressure washer after your day’s work is finished to scrape or spray off mud and debris from your tracks and the undercarriage. Inspect your excavator carefully after each ride and before you board it in the morning to make sure that no debris is clogging up your machine.
